What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone to support a crown, bridge or denture. The implant takes the place of the missing tooth root, and the restoration fitted to it takes the place of the visible tooth.
Who may be suitable for dental implants?
Suitability is decided by assessment, not by the type of gap alone. Your dentist checks the health of your gums, the neighbouring teeth and the amount and quality of bone available, and discusses anything in your medical or dental history that could affect treatment.
Can an implant replace one missing tooth?
A single implant with a crown is a common way to replace one missing tooth without involving the teeth either side. Whether it is appropriate in your case is confirmed after assessment.
What are the alternatives to a dental implant?
The usual alternatives are a conventional bridge supported by the neighbouring teeth, a removable denture, or leaving the gap and monitoring it. Each has different advantages and drawbacks, and we go through them with you before anything is agreed.
What happens at an implant consultation?
We discuss what you would like to achieve, examine your teeth, gums and bite, and take the scans or x-rays needed to assess the site. You then receive the options that apply to your case, in writing, with the fees set out before treatment begins.
How long can implant treatment take?
Implant treatment usually happens in stages over several months, because the implant needs time to integrate with the bone before the final restoration is fitted. Your own timeline depends on your case and is explained at your consultation.

Implant or bridge?
An implant replaces the root itself and does not rely on the neighbouring teeth. A bridge is supported by the teeth either side, which can be sensible where those teeth already need crowning. Neither is automatically the better choice — we set out both for your own mouth, along with what happens if you do nothing for now, before you decide.
Which options are genuinely available to you depends on your bone, gum health and the position of the gap, so it can only be confirmed after an examination and 3D imaging.
