Urgent dental problems
Toothache
Ongoing, throbbing or sharp tooth pain, pain when biting, or pain that wakes you at night. Tell us where it is and how long it has been going on and the team will advise on the next step.
Dental swelling
Swelling around a tooth, in the gum, or in the face or jaw. Swelling always needs to be assessed, so please contact us rather than waiting to see if it settles.
Broken or chipped teeth
A tooth that has fractured, chipped or worn to a sharp edge, with or without pain. Keep any pieces if you have them and bring them with you.
Lost filling
A filling that has come out or broken away, leaving a rough surface or sensitivity. This is usually assessed so we can see how much tooth is left to work with.
Lost crown
A crown that has come loose or come off completely. Keep the crown safe and bring it with you — whether it can be re-used is decided after an examination.
Dental trauma
An injury to the teeth, gums, lips or jaw after a fall, sports injury or accident, including a tooth that has been knocked, loosened or displaced. Contact us as soon as you can so we can advise you.
Wisdom-tooth pain
Pain, tenderness or swelling at the back of the mouth, difficulty cleaning the area, or discomfort when opening. We assess the area and explain the options with you.
Pain following recent dental treatment
Discomfort after a filling, extraction, root canal treatment or a new restoration. Please tell us what was done and when, and we will advise on reviewing it.
Broken restorations
A fractured crown, bridge, veneer, denture or an appliance that no longer fits or has broken. Bring the restoration with you where possible.

- 01Discussion of your symptomsWe listen to what you are experiencing, where it is and how long it has been going on.
- 02Relevant historyWe ask about your dental and medical history, medication and any recent treatment.
- 03ExaminationA clinician examines the tooth or area concerned, together with the surrounding gums and soft tissues.
- 04X-rays where clinically requiredRadiographs are taken only when they are clinically justified and will help with the assessment.
- 05Explaining the findingsWe tell you what we have found, and what we cannot yet be certain about.
- 06Immediate optionsWe talk through the options available to you at that appointment and what each involves.
- 07Stabilisation or pain relief where clinically possibleWhere it is appropriate, we aim to make the tooth or area more comfortable and more stable.
- 08Further treatment planningIf more treatment is needed, we plan it with you and give you a written estimate before it goes ahead.
An urgent appointment is an assessment. Definitive treatment cannot be guaranteed at a first appointment — some problems need more time, a further visit or a referral, and we will explain that to you.
